The devil made me do it

Tuesday, Marvel fans of a certain age and beyond gathered around their TV screens at 9 p.m. to witness the return of Charlie Cox’s Daredevil in the long-awaited series. A semi-sequel to the groundbreaking Netflix series, Daredevil: Born Again finds Cox’s Matt Murdock at ground zero. After a devastating loss, he hangs his devil horns up for good. But cries for justice beckon him back to the streets as he takes on a dangerous cop killer case.
As Matt battles his demon, Wilson Fisk has coveted a new title: mayor. The newly minted politician seeks to fix NYC and restore it to its past glory. One free of masked vigilantes undermining the NYPD’s rule of law and order.

The two-episode premiere delivered in the promises many echoed about the season. It’s packed with jaw-dropping action scenes, more brutal than the grounded reality of the 2015 series. The acting remains top-tier with Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio returning to form with new and familiar faces. Michael Gandolfini is one of my favorite new characters as the Fisk fanatic, Daniel Blake. Some may feel cheated about a bait-and-switch with a few characters, but this allows a new narrative direction with some nostalgia pieced throughout.

The first episode was set up while the second does some heavy lifting cementing the narrative’s direction. Eerily, the political commentary hits very close to home if not redundant. However, a strong finish sets up episode three.
Daredevil: Born Again arrives every Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET on Disney Plus.
Who killed Cal is answered in Paradise season one finale

Hulu’s hit thriller came to a robust conclusion last Tuesday, with Sterling K. Brown’s Agent Xavier Collins solving the president’s murder. In a rather rushed episode, the culprit was revealed to be someone from the city’s past, before the tsunami ravaged the world. While the road to this discovery worked, the resolution felt abrupt, leaving some viewers wanting more. Fortunately, with a season renewal, we can look forward to what will happen to our colorful characters quite soon as production is already underway.
The biggest revelation in the episode was the power dynamic between Julianne Nicholson’s Sinatra and her lethal foot soldier Jane. The “bigger killer” who silenced the troubled Billy Paige proved more formidable (and unhinged) than our billionaire boss anticipated. While she holds power over the city’s architect, Jane’s true motives are still hidden from Xavier, who trusts the agent with his life and his children.
Hopefully, we learn Jane’s backstory in the upcoming season as Xavier ventures beyond the dome to find the love he left in Atlanta two years ago.
All eight episodes of Paradise are available to stream on Hulu.
The Pitt: So you had a bad day?

This week’s episode of The Pitt swung a hard left I didn’t see coming. If you’re following along (spoilers ahead), you know Drs. Santos and Langdon have walked the entire series on the wrong feet. Santos’ braggadocio approach to the profession placed her in his crosshairs, despite some of her hunches and choices being right. At the same time, Langdon’s peculiar behavior and inconsistencies with medicine raised a flag for the younger Santos.
What many thought was Santos overreacting was finally confirmed in episode 10, the shocking truth spilling out in the final five minutes. What was harder to watch than Langdon potentially losing his job was Dr. Robbie realizing his ER was compromised. With admin already breathing down his neck, the last thing he needs is a physician high while on the job.
The last three episodes ended with breathtaking cliffhangers, with the latest impacting the show’s ecosystem.
The Pitt streams every Thursday at 9 p.m. only on Max.
AMC’s Dark Winds returns with triumphant season three

The period crime noir Dark Winds returns tonight for its third season. Based on characters created by Tony Hillerman, the series focuses on the crimes investigated by a Navajo tribal police station in 1970s New Mexico. This season finds the lead, Zahn McClarnon’s Joe Leaphorn, seeking to solve a missing child case. As he works to bring a culprit to justice, he’s haunted by past sins. The series continues to be a shining gem on AMC’s roster, with extraordinary performances from the lead and supporting cast. This season also captures one of the year’s finest hours of television, with McClarnon giving a tour de force performance.
Dark Winds airs on Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on AMC and the next day on AMC+.
