Fight the Empire!

Andor wrapped its four-week run with a path right into 2017’s Rogue One. Before Cassian accepted his inevitable fate, Andor delivered some of its best episodes the prior week with an all-too-familiar scenario: the government-orchestrated collapse of a sovereign nation stripped of its resources. The fall of Ghorman, a calculated seizure fueled by colonial greed, perfectly captured the ruthless deceit the Empire moves in, and how being a tool in the cog of imperialism doesn’t win you glory, but the same gory consequences suffered by everything else in its path.

I watched in terror as the Empire’s plan came to fruition. A year of propaganda soured the galaxy into viewing citizens as a threat to the government. And as hearts turned cold, so did resources and support to stand against lies disguised as truth. The insidious provocation made it easier for soldiers to eliminate unarmed lives: they fired first, the citizens innocently singing in the face of a militarized force. It was Ferrix on steroids.

The terrifying factor is this depiction in a galaxy far, far away has been happening for years in countries that are closer in the name of our alleged freedom. Newsflash: if you haven’t connected the dots since the 70s, the United States is the Empire. We are the benevolent leaders of the free world that hides its imperialist motives in a cloak made of manifest destined, white savior liberty and justice for all. The atrocities we have unleashed on populations around the globe and this land are well-documented, in narratives only the winners can conjure. But, as of late, those “truths” have been harder to hide, ignore, and reconcile, which is how we have the Orange Agent-in-Chief to Make America Great Again.

The movement to return this country to some past glory is a front to resume the white supremacist rule of yesteryear; when Blacks were, by law, separated and unequal; L, G, B, T, and Q were just letters in the alphabet; and women were seen and not heard. This wasn’t a decision made overnight. This was a goal decades in the making to let this country’s evil roots bear its fruit without shame. And now that it’s here, in its full regalia, there’s a bigger truth many whites must confront.

If you stan Cassian, but can’t empathize with the plight of immigrants; if you root for the Rebels, but think criticizing Israel is anti-Semitic; if you wished Keno knew how to swim, but think due process isn’t necessary; if you think we need to fund police more than schools and mental health facilities — you are part of the Empire and on the wrong side of history.

Netflix’s The Old Guard 2 pits Theron against Thurman

It’s been 84 years since the sleeper hit, The Old Guard, wowed us. Finally, after COVID and the writer’s strike, we get the anticipated sequel that follows our group of immortal heroes as a new threat rises. Beat death on July 2.

Thunderbolts* delivers average jolts

Marvel’s next foray into this saga was the highly anticipated Thunderbolts*, a misfit group of first-rate villains becoming second-rate anti-heroes. Led by the amazing Florence Pugh as Yelena, the film goes through familiar, rather meager Marvel action sequences and tropes. It only gets interesting when it introduces a unique take on mental health, with some pretty dope production design. Although, it all feels like a different slice of what we’ve encountered with WandaVision and Agatha All Along.

The end-credits scene sets up some exciting things to come, which will feel like a much-needed reset to the Marvel Cinematic Universe machine.
